Our Story
Equitas Academy was founded in 2009 by Malka Borrego, who was a Building Excellent Schools fellow in 2007. It began with a powerful idea: to provide a structured, achievement-based community that prepares students to graduate from four-year colleges and universities. That idea continues to provide the mission and vision for Equitas Academy and guides our work everyday.

At Equitas Academy Charter Schools, we believe that scholars must have access to an achievement-oriented learning environment, beginning in kindergarten through high school, to ensure all students make a smooth transition to the demands of college preparatory high schools with the ultimate goal of college graduation.

Our educational program enables students, despite obstacles, to learn to read, write, and compute at or above grade level.

We created a school with a college preparatory focus in the elementary grades, so students develop the foundational skills necessary for entrance into high-performing secondary schools.

Our school enriches the lives of students and their families. We help our families support their children on their journey to college.

At Equitas Academy Charter Schools, we believe in a strong parent-school partnership. We believe that schools are only as strong as our families and as our community, so we aim to foster a strong partnership across the board. At Equitas, some things that set us aside include:

Monthly coffee chats with our School Directors and School Managers
Learn about what's happening at the school and a space to ask general questions
- Family Nights
Monthly themed evenings led by teachers and Expanded Learning staff
Themes include International Family Night, Game Night, Workshops for Parents and Scholars
- Family Days
Fun Saturday events aimed towards building community
Held twice a year, supported strongly by parent volunteers
- School Site Council
Monthly meetings led by parent leaders
Meetings typically focused on organizing school events and fundraising
- Opportunities to volunteer
Opportunities may include lunch-time support, office support, volunteering during pick-up and drop-off, and more!
At Equitas Academy Charter Schools, families are encouraged to volunteer 20 hours every school year, but it is not required.
