Welcome to Ross Sheppard High School's Ceramics program. Take a studio tour or find out what students are doing in each of the ceramics classes offered at our wonderful school.
Students in Ceramics 15 learn the basic hand building (pinch, coil, slab) and throwing techniques. They are also introduced to surface design techniques such as slip, underglaze, glaze, mashima, sgrafitto, and incising. The students explore both functional and non-functional design ideas in their projects preparing them for further advanced techniques in ceramics 25 & 35.
Students in Ceramics 25 continue to build their hand building and throwing skills. They are also introduced to more advanced surface design techniques such as mono-transfer, resists, sprigging and rolled textures. The students further explore colour theory and design principles in their work as well as launch their own personal final project preparing them for further advanced techniques in ceramics 35.
Students in Ceramics 35 continue to master their hand building and throwing skills. They are also introduced to more advanced ceramic techniques such as glaze construction from raw ingredients, slip casting porcelain vessels, and jewelry making using bone china. In addition to this, advanced surface design skills using on-glaze, decals, and screen printing are learned to help students better incorporate their own dynamic expressions and imagery into their work. By the end of the course, the students launch their own final capping project preparing them for further work in post secondary ceramics (or enrollment in Portfolio Art 35).
