Tracy did not want a traditional funeral, so instead, we will host a gathering for school staff in our large gym with physical distancing and masking in place. COVID-19 protocols do not allow vistors into the school to join us in-person.
Please join us online on Monday, October 18th at 2:30 pm as we gather to share stories and memories in her honour.
Graduated from Sturgeon Composite High school in 1988
Tracy worked as a Cashier at the Hudson Bay Company while attending University
Completed her B Ed in 1992 with a major in English and a minor in Social Studies
Taught in La Crete, Alberta with the Fort Vermilion School Division from 1992 - 1996
Finalist for the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995
Completed her B A After Degree in 1998 in Honours English
Applied to EPSB in 1998 and landed at Strathcona High School
She went on to teach at Centre High
She began her leadership journey as Department Head of English at J Percy Page, and spent 11 years here at Vimy Ridge Academy in the same position.
Tracy changed the lives of her students with her direct teaching style, her generous spirit, and her kind heart. She was a fighter for the underdog and took youth under her wing whenever she recognized a need in their personal or academic lives.
She worked tirelessly to ensure students completed their graduation requirements, both in English and in all other subjects.
She contributed to each school community within which she worked by mentoring new teachers, coaching her department members, advocating for positive change, and building a sense of team on staff.
Tracy loved the performing arts and spent many, many hours enjoying plays and dance performances. She supported our school community through her attendance at hundreds of performances.
She organized and directed the Christmas Helping Hampers project for families in our catchment every Christmas
She was an avid supporter of Indigenous content and intentionally and thoughtfully incorporated Canadian Indigenous authors and their literature into her courses.
Tracy was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in Jauary of 2020. She passed away in the company of those she loved at Pilgrim's Hospice on Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
Most recently, she chose 20 people in her life and invited them to her Fairy Godmother Project. She wrote each of them a cheque for $5000.00. She invited each member of the project to identify and disperse funds to local grassroots organizations or families who could benefit from a gift that will make their lives better. “Forget Cinderella and the patriarchal princess needing rescue crap”. Instead, she challenged them to think about the wonder of being able to change lives now.. Their task was simple: spend it on those in need, reflecting your values and passion for helping others. Stipulations to the project included:
1. Must be grassroots or local to your community
2. No large corporations or causes please (Big C and Edmonton Humane Society
and their ilk already have massive donation programs).
The Fairy Godmother Project opportunities were shared through a private Facebook Group and the pay it forward feeling of joy was simply unbelievable.
Those who wish to honour Tracy are encouraged to select a project as described above and contribute to making their communities a better place.
Tracy has also established two scholarships for graduates at Vimy Ridge Academy; the Tracy Wright Memorial Scholarship and the Tracy Wright Community Service Award. Each award is valued at $1000 per recipient each year for ten years.
