MATH

For the past three years Kate Chegwin’s Math results have been the highest in our zone for students meeting the acceptable level as well as the level of excellence on the Grade 9 Achievement Exam. Several factors have contributed to this success including the development of a three year program that effectively transitions students from elementary to appropriate high school programming. Our knowledgeable teachers value the importance of teaching for understanding and long term retention, rather than memorization and a thorough understanding of the spiraled math curriculum allows our teachers to extend many concepts beyond the curriculum to better prepare students for the next grade. We expect the best from our students, setting high, yet realistic expectations to help create critical thinkers, problem solvers, and mathematically literate individuals.

SCIENCE

The junior high Science program is guided by the vision that all students have the opportunity to develop scientific literacy. The goal of scientific literacy is to develop the science-related knowledge, skills and attitudes that students need to solve problems and make decisions, and at the same time enabling them to become lifelong learners and maintain their sense of wonder about the world around them. Kate Chegwin students will use a variety of investigative means to explore the topics below.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Social Studies develops the key values and attitudes, knowledge and understanding, and skills and processes necessary for students to become active and responsible citizens, engaged in the democratic process and aware of their capacity to effect change in their communities, society and world.

LANGUAGE ARTS

In language arts, students will demonstrate increasing confidence in their abilities and competence in their use of language. Language arts emphasize the lifelong application of reading, writing, listening, speaking, representing, and viewing. The six strands are interrelated and enable students to communicate ideas and feelings, develop critical thinking skills, and contribute to their social and personal growth. The six language arts strands of reading, writing, listening and speaking, viewing and representing, are integrated in a variety of themes and units. From grade to grade, students extend and refine the language skills they have already learned. Opportunities are provided for students to practice those skills in new contexts, and to use more increasingly challenging learning material.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The aim of the K–12 physical education program is to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Students participate in a variety of physical activities: dance, games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in alternative environments, such as aquatics and outdoor pursuits. All learning outcomes are to be met through these activities.
