English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program at Harry Ainlay High School
At Harry Ainlay High School, our EAL (English as an Additional Language) program is dedicated to supporting English Language Learners (ELLs) in developing the academic and communication skills necessary for success in high school and beyond. Through structured English courses, sheltered content instruction, and additional support services, we help students build confidence in their language abilities while integrating into the school community.
Program Overview
Our EAL program:
Supports students at various English proficiency levels (beginner to advanced)
Develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for academic and everyday use
Prepares students for high school completion, post-secondary education, and career pathways
Encourages cultural identity and multilingualism while fostering engagement in Canadian society
Course Offerings
Our program provides language and academic courses tailored to different English proficiency levels:
1. English Language Development Courses
ESL Level 1-4 – Step-by-step progression from basic English to academic fluency
Expository English 15 (Levels 1 & 2) – Focuses on academic reading, writing, and critical thinking
ELA 10-2 for ELLs – Designed for advanced English learners preparing for mainstream high school English
2. Sheltered Content Courses
EAL Science & EAL Math – Develops scientific and mathematical thinking using modified language support
Canadian Studies for ELLs – Introduces Canadian history, government, geography, and cultural identity
