Bucket-Fillers

At Gilbert Avenue Elementary, we thrive on promoting a positive environment infused with kindness and respect. Our bucket filling program showcases just that. It coincides with Carol McCloud’s book, “Have you filled a bucket today?” At the beginning of each school year, the kindergarten classes are read this book and introduced to this school-wide program. The book talks about the invisible bucket that everyone carries with their happy feelings inside. When an individual conducts a random act of kindness, they are contributing to filling another person’s bucket. Many students are surprised to hear that when they fill someone else’s bucket, they are also filling their own! However, when individuals engage in name calling or unkind behaviour, they are bucket dipping. By dipping into someone else’s bucket, you can never fill your own. When a staff member notices a student conducting an act of kindness, they fill out a bucket-filling slip. Bucket-fillers are announced monthly.
