Future Engineers Club, constructed a model of a column. The aim of this model was to clearly determine and recognise all the parts of a column. The construction phase took one week.
Firstly, we modelled the structure in AutoCAD software, which is a computer aided design developed by Autodesk. In the CAD modelling there were modelled the elements of a real scaled column which consists of:
● steel bars
● shear links
● form work
● concrete
The diameter of this column is 14cm and reaches a height of 60cm. There were used 6 steel bars with a diameter of 0.3cm to represent the steel bars of a regular column.
The next step was to link these bars. This link was made with a soft wire that surrounds the bars in a spiral way. In the final step the reinforcement is inserted into a cubic mold and it is filled with concrete.
After 3 days the column was removed from the cement.
