A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. The focus is on academics, health and social services, youth and community development. Community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities.
The EPISD Community Schools program started in 2016 and is presently at the Bowie , Jefferson and EL Paso High feeder patterns. It is based on four pillars or areas of focus:
Integrated student supports
Expanded learning time and opportunities
Family and community engagement
Collaborative leadership practices
The Community Schools program is part of the Equity and Stakeholder Engagement Department. Here are the key positions:
Executive Director: Ray Lozano
Assistant Director: Simon Chandler
VISTA Leader: Juan Adame
The program is staffed by Community Schools Specialists (CSS) (AmeriCorps VISTA Members). AmeriCorps VISTA is a federal program in which members commit to 12 months of service with a host organization to help build capacity and sustainability.
The EPHS feeder pattern has two full time CSSs who will work out the Community Schools Hub at Wiggs, to support the work of the Family and Community Liaison.
In addition, the program will ensure that each campus offers some basic services and activities that may include:
• Food pantries
• Hygiene closets
• Adult education classes
• Enrichment programs
• After school activities
• Resource fairs
