in EPISD

Promoting and implementing SEL begins with fostering a warm, nurturing, and motivating school climate where every interaction with peers and adults supports students socially and emotionally. It involves creating consistent opportunities throughout the school day to practice skills that reinforce SEL instruction and make SEL relevant to students’ daily lives (CASEL.org) This section provides information and resources to learn more about Social Emotional Learning in our district.

SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that features trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy and just communities."

Learning

at home

Schools and families have essential roles to play in promoting children’s positive development and academic performance. When educators and parents work together as partners, they create important opportunities for children to develop social, emotional, and academic competencies. Families are a child’s first teacher and an essential partner in the cultivation of social and emotional competencies throughout a child’s life. Families who understand and value SEL help provide consistent supports for young people across their school and home lives.

Click on Kindness at Home below for more information on Making Kindness the Norm at Home.

At the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, we believe kindness starts with one, and there is no "one" better than you— the parent or guardian to the kid in your family —to start a kindness revolution at home. You have the power to set a kind tone for your entire household. There's never been a better time to infuse more kindness at home!

September SEL Competency Focus

The SEL Competency for September is Self-Awareness

How to Create a Family “Coping Kit”

Adapted from confidentparentsconfidentkids.org

  • Use "emotion emojis", "the feelings wheel" or create your own family set of emotional emojis to name and acknowledge emotions children may be experiencing. Remember, there are no “bad” emotions–it’s ok for them to feel whatever they feel

  • Practice calming breathing techniques and mindfulness activities to reduce stress

  • Try yoga or other movement and stretching activities

  • Do fun indoor physical activities and games

  • Provide a private journal or sketchbook where children can express their emotions through writing or drawing

SEL-Informed Literacy at Home

Systemic SEL implementation in schools provides students with the life skills needed to thrive in school and beyond. Explicit SEL instruction can be implemented through literacy. Each month we will provide a library in the SEL-Informed Literacy section to support diverse, culturally-affirming literature to inspire our families and their children to engage with reading, accelerate their academic achievement, and develop life-changing social and emotional skills. This month's Care & Share library has many books that focus on Social Awareness. We hope you take the time to view all of the English and Spanish titles provided.

Competency Libraries

Reading different books silently or aloud with someone else helps children build phonics skills and fluency. Talking about books, answering questions, and re-telling stories helps children develop their ability to understand language. Model this practice and make reading part of your home/bedtime routine.

Parent Engagement Liaisons (PELs)

Our PELs serve as a liaison between parents and administrators and offer support and assistance to help parents understand the educational system and/or district programs. They also provide opportunities and continual support for parents and families in being advocates for their child's education.
