🌟 Cooley Elementary: Young Scientists and Engineers in Action! 🌟
October was filled with creativity and discovery at Cooley Elementary! 🚀 From Pre-K to 5th grade, students explored science and engineering through hands-on learning in their classrooms and the LEGO Lab.
Pre-K students practiced sorting LEGO bricks by color, building math and problem-solving skills. 🎨 Kindergartners became shadow scientists, discovering how light and shapes create shadows. ☀️🔦 First graders explored heating and cooling by melting crayons, cooking pancakes, and even spelling their names with LEGO letters! 🍳💡
Second and third graders studied force and motion by building ramps and racing cars, while fourth graders experimented with gravity, friction, and magnetism using their own LEGO car designs. 🧲⚙️ Fifth graders became Earth scientists, modeling how sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels form over time. 🌍🪨
From sorting colors to testing forces, Cooley students are learning, creating, and discovering the world like true scientists and engineers! 🌈👏
District Certification
This month, El Paso ISD proudly began its journey toward becoming a nationally STEM-certified school district. In partnership with the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE), we are committed to enhancing STEM instruction across all campuses.
Our first step is establishing a district-wide baseline of STEM instruction. To guide this work, we’ve formed a Guiding Coalition—a dedicated team of district and campus leaders. This coalition will lead the development of EPISD’s STEM goals, mission, and vision, ensuring a unified and strategic approach to STEM education.
We’re excited about the possibilities ahead and look forward to sharing our progress with the community.
Campus Certification
This October, EPISD’s four science academies officially began their journey toward becoming nationally STEM-certified campuses. Each campus leadership team is actively working to define a clear STEM vision, set strategic goals, and develop tailored action plans to meet the unique needs of their school communities.
Throughout this year-long certification process, teams will deepen their understanding of STEM integration across curriculum, instruction, and accountability. They’ll also learn to apply STEM protocols to guide instructional decisions, implement comprehensive professional development, and continuously monitor and refine their action plans.
This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening STEM education across our district.
Teacher Certification
We are incredibly proud of the dedicated teachers across EPISD who are taking bold steps toward becoming nationally STEM certified! Their commitment to professional growth and instructional excellence is inspiring.
Several of our educators have recently reached a major milestone—completing five STEM indicators in their certification journey. This achievement reflects their hard work and growing expertise in STEM integration.
Let’s celebrate their progress and continue to support them as they lead the way in transforming STEM instruction across our district! 🎉

LEGO® Education: The program is founded on a competency-based framework that is rooted in four core competency categories: Pedagogy, STEAM Concepts, 21st Century Skills and Classroom Management. These critical competencies enable teachers to facilitate, and fully realize the learning promises in every LEGO® Education solution to drive student learning outcomes.
LEGO LESSONS ALIGNED TO CURRICULUM
🚀 This month, our LEGO Labs have officially launched across El Paso ISD Academies, bringing hands-on excitement to classrooms from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Thanks to an incredible collaboration with LEGO Education, teachers now have access to thoughtfully designed lesson progressions tailored to each grade level. These engaging, project-based STEAM experiences empower our teachers to confidently deliver high-quality instruction while sparking creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking in every student.
The sky is the limit! 🪂 With LEGO lesson progressions, teachers have the opportunity to:
Foster Collaboration and Integration – Plan with colleagues in other departments to integrate these learning experiences into a comprehensive Project Unit that explores multiple content areas through hands-on learning and computer science.
Engage Curiosity – Use an experience at the beginning of a unit of study to inspire curiosity about the subject.
Explore Content Concepts – Use an experience to help students get hands on to explore the real-world application of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
Elaborate Understanding – Use an experience as a unit capstone or a culminating project, allowing students to transfer learning from multiple different content areas to demonstrate understanding and progress with skills and concepts.
📚 In October, our teachers had the valuable opportunity to engage in a professional learning community (PLC) session with Tammy Motley, Senior National STEM Coach from Accelerate Learning. During the session, Tammy shared her expertise on the STEMscopes online platform and the 5E instructional model, offering practical insights and strategies for effective STEM instruction. Teachers appreciated the chance to ask questions and receive personalized guidance from an expert in the field. The session proved to be an enriching experience, enhancing instructional practices and deepening our educators’ understanding of high-quality STEM teaching.🧑🏫
🚀 Our STEM Instructional Coaches are leading the way this fall!
✅ Engaged in STEMscopes and curriculum alignment to strengthen instructional practices
✅ Analyzed first nine weeks data and discussed academic responses for continued growth
✅ Shared impactful classroom artifacts and coaching strategies to support teachers
✅ Highlighted STEM Nights and clubs that bring hands-on learning to life across campuses
✨ Collaboration + aligned instruction = big wins for our STEM programs and student success! 🌟
🌟 STEM/STEAM Academies Kick Off the 2nd Nine Weeks with Purpose and Creativity! 🌟
Our K–5 STEM/STEAM teachers came together for an inspiring Curriculum Conversations session focused on intentional planning and engaging instruction. 🚀 Teachers explored the 2nd Nine Weeks TEKS, connected the 5E Cycle to STEMscopes lessons, and collaborated to internalize and customize learning experiences that meet the unique needs of their students. 💡
The session wrapped up with planning and pacing to align instruction and ensure every student experiences hands-on, inquiry-based learning that sparks curiosity and innovation. 🔬✨
Aligned planning + creative teaching = big learning moments ahead this nine weeks! 🌈👏
