To be considered for one of Hornedo Middle School’s competitive robotics teams, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Academic Performance
You must maintain A’s and B’s in all of your classes to be eligible for the team. Academic success is a priority, and you are expected to balance your coursework with your robotics commitments.
2. Attendance and Commitment
Regular attendance is crucial. Your team will depend on you, and consistent participation is key to success.
In addition to meeting during your engineering class, you must attend after-school practices as scheduled.
3. Self-Motivation
You must be able to stay focused on tasks and work independently when necessary. Robotics requires both teamwork and individual initiative.
4. Teamwork and Collaboration
Being part of a robotics team means working well with others. You must be able to resolve conflicts within the team and communicate effectively with your teammates. Collaboration is essential to success.
5. Coaching Commitment
Each student must have an adult who is willing to volunteer as a coach for at least one Saturday competition. No prior experience is needed, and full training and flexibility will be provided.
6. Transportation
You will need reliable transportation to and from all competitions. Competitions are typically held on Saturdays from around 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Most events will be within the city, though some may be as far as Horizon.
7. Competitive and Growth Mindset
A competitive spirit is important, but equally essential is the ability to learn from both victories and setbacks. Maintaining a positive attitude and viewing challenges as learning opportunities will help you grow as a robotics competitor.
8. Ethics and Integrity
You are expected to demonstrate strong ethical conduct, integrity, and character at all times, both inside and outside the classroom. Team members are role models for their peers.
9. Must be enrolled in a CTE Class such as Principles of Applied Engineering.
Due to this requirement, robotics is not offered to 6th grade students. However, 6th grade students may ask the robotics advisor to apply to be an apprentice.
10. Robotics Advisor reserves the right to adjust these requirements at any time (usually only done to fix errors and omissions).
If you meet these requirements and are excited about the opportunity to compete, the next step is to complete the initial survey and express your interest. After the survey, selected candidates will proceed to a formal application process. The final decision will be made based on your academic standing, commitment level, and ability to contribute to the team.
The first step is to complete this first application - (2024-25 applications are now closed)
