General Music Classes

Mission Statement

Epiphany Catholic School, a Christ-centered environment, is dedicated to developing the whole child through academic excellence and nourishing servant leaders in the footsteps of Jesus.

K-8 Music classes follow the Curriculum Guidelines of the Office of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Arlington. Below is a sampling of the guidelines.

Kindergarten Students ~

  • have music class once a week for 40 minutes every Thursday from Noon -12:40 pm.
  • sing sacred and secular songs
  • play percussion instruments
  • create choreographed and non-choreographed movements/dance.
  • learn about orchestral families.
  • connect to other disciplines, particularly religion and literature.
  • create musical sounds to enhance stories/poems.


Grade 1 Students ~

  • have music class once a week for 45 minutes every Thursday from 9:00 am - 9:45 am.
  • sing sacred and secular songs
  • play percussion instruments
  • create locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
  • dance.
  • learn about orchestral families which segues to Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.
  • connect to other disciplines, particularly literature and religion.
  • create musical sounds to enhance stories/poems.

Grade 2 Students ~

  • have music class once a week for 45 minutes every Thursday from 9:45 am - 10:30 am.
  • sing sacred and secular songs
  • play percussion instruments
  • create choreographed and non-choreographed movements/dance.
  • learn about orchestral families which segues to Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.
  • connect to other disciplines, particularly religion and literature.
  • create musical sounds to enhance stories/poems.

Grade 3 Music Students ~

  • have music class once a week for 45 minutes every Thursday from 10:30 am - 11:15 am.
  • sing sacred and secular songs.
  • play percussion instruments.
  • create locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
  • create choreographed and non-choreographed movements/dance.
  • connect to other disciplines, particularly religion, science, math and social studies.
  • learn musical notation.
  • learn to play the recorder and earn Recorder "belts."


  • Grade 4 Students ~
  • have music class once a week for 45 minutes every Tuesday from 9:45 am - 10:30 am.
  • sing sacred and secular songs.
  • play percussion instruments.
  • create choreographed and non-choreographed movements/dance.
  • connect to other disciplines, particularly religion, science, math and social studies.
  • create musical sounds and choose musical compositions to enhance stories/poems.
  • have the option to play a band instrument.

Grade 5 Students ~

  • have music class once a week for 45 minutes every Tuesday from 10:30 am - 11:15 am.
  • sing sacred and secular songs.
  • play percussion instruments.
  • create choreographed and non-choreographed movements/dance.
  • connect to other disciplines, particularly religion, science, math and social studies.
  • create musical sounds and choose musical compositions to enhance stories/poems.
  • have the option to play a band instrument.
  • may participate in one of the Schola choirs for weekly Mass.
  • may audition for Schola Primo, the performing choir.

Middle School Students ~

have music class once a week for 45 minutes every Tuesday.

  • Grade 8 - 11:15 am - Noon
  • Grade 7 - 1:30 pm - 2:15 pm
  • Grade 6 - 2:15 pm - 3:00 pm
  • sing sacred and secular songs.
  • play instruments.
  • create choreographed and non-choreographed movements/dance.
  • connect to other disciplines, particularly religion, science, math and social studies.
  • compose an original composition with Finale NotePad on school laptops.
  • present musical artist/s for "Who Am I?"
  • collaborate to compose rhythmic compositions.
  • identify composers, compositions and genres
  • describe and evaluate live performances (i.e. Richmond Symphony)
  • may participate in one of the Schola choirs for weekly Mass.
  • may audition for Schola Primo, the performing choir.
  • have the option to play a band instrument.
  • have the option to play guitar (after school Enrichment class).

K-3 Students ~ For the 2018-2019 school year, K-3 students are creating characters, sound effects, costumes and props for their rendition of The Three Pigs. Students will become the actors and musicians during the Epiphany Showcase on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 6:30 pm. Please mark your calendars.

Grade 3 students have the opportunity to earn Karate "belts" as they master notation, fingerings, and compositions. We utilize Recorder Karate lessons.

Friday, February 8, 2019 ~ Grade 4 students will lead the school in the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Mass.

  • Grade 1 ~ Friday, May 3, 2019
  • Kindergarten ~ Friday, June 7, 2019

Grade 4 and 5 student continue to learn the Virginia Reel. We hope to have them perform the dance at a PTO meeting.

Students are preparing their presentation of The Passion for the entire Epiphany community. For many students, The Passion is their first experience in a live performance. The students, along with Ms. R. Ciccarone and Ms. S. Ciccarone work very hard to produce the best presentation of the Passion of Our Lord. The performance will be Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 10:00 am.

Music is the universal language.
