Cornell Notes

What are Cornell Notes?

Cornell note-taking helps students recall and summarize major concpets, ideas, charts and graphs for a particular unit of study. By breaking the notes into distinct areas it simplifies the acquisition and retention of information.

How to use

All you need before you start a lesson is a piece of paper and a pencil. You can even just use your computer or laptop.

Steps

  1. Divide your paper into 3 main sections (example, right)

  2. At the top of your notes you may want to write your name, the date, the subject, lesson or any other information that might make it easy to identify your notes later.

  3. As you read the material, watch videos, or listen to lectures, take notes in the "notes" section. You do not need to copy things word for word. Just focus on the most important information.

  4. After you have finished taking notes you will use the column on the left to add comments, write down questions, or list key themes you noticed while taking your notes.

  5. Now you will write a summary of the lesson based on your notes. This should be a brief paragraph of no less than 2 to 3 sentences
