Comfort Foods

By Arianna Betancourt and Katherine Veliz

Many people have a specific food that will completely change their mood. They could be having the worst day but eating their favorite food could distract them and help them feel better. We asked students and teachers what their comfort foods are, and here's what they said:

Börek

“My comfort food is börek (meat pie). I make it at home. It’s something I grew up with and whenever I take a bite out of it, it reminds me of my old apartment, being around my family, and having a good time.” - Kristina Gazivoda

Frosted Flakes

“I would say cereal, specifically Frosted Flakes right now. I buy it from the grocery stores. I think it’s my comfort snack because I grew up on it ,and it’s something quick and filling to eat.” - Sophia Valle

Papa De Relleno

“My comfort food is definitely papa de relleno. It just makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. The first time I had it was when my grandma bought it for me. I'm a very picky eater, but I’ve always trusted my grandmother no matter what so I decided to try it for her and I immediately loved it. She has passed but every time I eat it I am reminded of memories of her enjoying it with me.” - Alynamarie Robinson

Babka

“Anything sweet with milk, something like Babka, a Jewish sweet. Honestly, I don’t know how we get it, it just usually appears in my house. I'm pretty sure my mom just buys it from somewhere. It does hold a sentimental value because it has been my comfort food for years. Whenever I feel stressed, I will eat a piece with a glass of milk. It helps me feel a bit less stressed because it helps everything slow down.” - Oziel Santiago

Pasta

“Any type of pasta is my comfort food. I make it most of the time because for some reason I don’t like buying it from places. It holds a sentimental value because me and a close cousin of mine would always eat spaghetti when we were younger. She doesn’t live here anymore, and I haven’t talked to her in years so I eat it to remember her and the times we had.” - Isaiah Fountain

Chestnuts

“My comfort food is chestnuts. I buy them at the store. They do hold a sentimental value; they remind me of when my dad and I would sit by a fire and cook them together.” - Mrs. Lasku

Linguine and Clams

“My comfort food is linguine and clams. I order this at restaurants, but my dad also makes this for me when clams are in season. It is a family tradition to have it every year for New Year’s Eve.” - Mrs. Heinen

Chocolate Chip Cookies

“I would say chocolate chip cookies. I buy the dough to bake them at home. It reminds me of how much my family makes chocolate chip cookies at home.” - Ms. Gardiner

Spicy Doritos

“My comfort food is spicy Doritos. I usually buy them on my way home because I’m hungry and I just buy them. When I was pregnant I used to eat them a lot. I would crave them and that is what started my love for them.” - Ms. Barnes

Pizza

“My comfort food is pizza...any kind (except pineapple). I have made my own pizza and sometimes I buy it already made. It does hold a sentimental value because it reminds me of when I used to be in the kitchen with my mom.” - Mr. Contreras
