This book was written in 1979 and the time setting in the book was set between the 1950's and 1970's in Senegal. At this time, Senegal was gaining their independence from France and trying to form their own government. This was also a time when women were starting to gain more freedom with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in 1979. Which is why I believe the target audience is educated middle aged women of Senegal because the experiences of the characters in the book can be directly related to what the women in Senegal have gone or will go through. In their culture, it's normal for husbands to have multiple wives, but ignores the fact of how their wives feel about it. The vocabulary in the book also indicates that it's targeted towards older and/or educated people with the book having more sophisticated wording. The book, also was originally written in French but it kept some words in French ( the language that is spoken in Senegal) such as gnac, Siguil ndigale, etc... that people of Senegal would understand, but people who only know English, have to look either at the back of the book for a definition or look it up. Overall, I believe the book is targeted to women in general because I feel that all women can relate to men making them feel inferior.
