Our school uses the Open Up Resources curriculum for math, which meets our learning standards and is available online. You can find it at openupresources.org. In first grade, students will learn strategies for adding and subtracting within 20; learn to understand place value, grouping in 10's and 1's; linear measurement and time; and attributes of geometric shapes.
In our class, math is presented as more of a "puzzle" than a "problem." You can help at home by adopting a positive mindset toward mathematical thinking, and talking about it with your child in an encouraging way. Play games and do puzzles with your child at home - games and puzzles are math!
