Lesson 1: Geography and Culture
Maps - geography review (topography and where current reservations are)
Brainstorm (past knowledge)- what do you remember or know about Native American culture?
Conflict - discuss the causes of conflict (read/discussed before)
News/Current Event Connection - Read teacher selected articles - describe conflict mentioned.
As students read through the articles with teacher direction they are looking for:
Stakeholders: which tribe and which level of government is involved in the conflict: State/Local/Federal gov’t
Summary of Conflict- students should be able to summarize the conflict. Literacy strategy used with class is SWBST.
Somebody- Who was involved in the conflict
Wanted- what did they want to accomplish
But- What was getting in the way of the solution?
So- How did they go about working towards the solution
Then- How did it end or what is the next step in solving the process?
