Play Dough Recipe (this recipe will stay soft in an airtight container)
2.5 cups water
1 1/4 c. salt
1 1/2 tbsp. cream of tartar (this makes it keep longer, I don't always add it)
5 tbsp. vegetable oil
2.5 cups flour
Food coloring
Instructions:
Mix everything except the food coloring together in a large pot until somewhat smooth. It will be lumpy.
Cook the dough over a low heat. Mix frequently. The water will slowly cook out of the mixture and you’ll notice it starts to take on a sticky dough appearance. Keep mixing until the edges of the dough along the side and bottom of the pan appear dry. Pinch a piece of dough. If it’s not gooey, the dough is ready.
Place the dough on a counter top or large cutting board that can withstand a little food coloring.
Knead the warm dough until it’s smooth and then divide it into the number of colors that you’d like to make.

Salt Dough Recipe (this is meant to dry hard, and can be painted)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup salt
1 cup cold water
Instructions:
Mix flour and salt together in a bowl. Slowly mix water, a few tablespoons at a time, into flour mixture until dough is smooth and easy to handle. Knead dough for 10 minutes and let rest for 20 minutes.
From here, you can choose to let it air dry or bake it.
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F
Form dough into desired shapes and arrange on a baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven until dry and hard, about 2 hours. Allow to cool completely.
