Read their reflections below
"Based on the lectures, we understand the need for greater protection of the human rights of Roma people, including their rights to education, employment, and housing. Understanding the roots of the Roma is important for cultural diversity, raising awareness about historical discrimination that Roma people experienced, and recognising the contributions of the Roma community. The Roma people deserve to be treated equally, not to be stereotyped and have the potential to become very successful."

"These sessions helped us understand the Roma people and their culture. Thanks to all of the lectures we learned that the Roma people have a long and rich cultural heritage including literary traditions that offer insights into their unique experiences. We also found out about the challenges the Roma people had to face and how they faced them."
Year 1 student
"The past of the Roma is very interesting and we should learn more about it. They had to go through a lot of struggles throughout the years. The Roma made strong contributions to the cultures in countries they have settled in."
Year 1 student
"My strongest experience was standing in the little hut with seventeen other people knowing that Roma had to sleep there with that many people in the hut in the freezing cold, and just the thought of not having a coat there made me shiver."

Some works that the children sent us were exhibited in the gallery room in the city hall of Prague 9. We opened the exhibition together with some of the participants which came to visit us in Prague. For a week, the visitors were able to take home the pictures they liked for a small donation. All the raised money went to the Václav Havel Scholarship.
This year we received 353 submissions from you and we are very grateful for all of them. Our panel chose a winner in each of the age categories and themes.
The art pieces are from Pavel Rafael and his siblings Martin Jungwira and Rozárka Hesounová. Pavel and Martin used to be in a children's home. Even though they have very different life stories and very different personalities the one thing that binds them together is the love and care they receive from the family who took them under their wing. They spontaneously decided to take part in the competition together during quarantine and drew their pictures without the help of an adult.
Pavel named his drawing "Náš dům v zahradě podivuhodných rostlin (Our house in the garden of wonderful plants)" in the category "What do I think is the most beautiful thing in the world?" As explained by his teacher, for Pavel the most beautiful thing in the world is to simply have a home where they will love him for who he is.
Rozarka chose to participate in the "What gives me strength?" category and explained her picture as her getting strength from wishing something nice for others, being peaceful and having the opportunity to see nice things around her.
Martin submitted his picture in the category of "What is going on in my head?" He told us that he drew a "toothy sun" but that he doesn't want the sun to eat the plants around Pavel's drawing of the house.
The Three About Me's art competition in support of the Vaclav Havel Scholarship was running until 21.2.2021. The winners have won a trip to Prague and all submissions will be included in the auction of this year's jubilee Václav Havel Scholarship Concert.
Here you can have a look at their pictures.
