The aims of this course are to enable candidates to develop their mathematical knowledge and oral, written and practical skills in a way which encourages confidence and provides satisfaction and enjoyment. Students will increase their abilities to read mathematics and write and talk about the subject in a variety of ways. Throughout the two-year course and emphasis will be for students to apply mathematical concepts to the real world. Students will be able to recognize when and how a situation may be represented mathematically, identify and interpret relevant factors and, where necessary, select an appropriate mathematical method to solve the problem.
The readings and assignments in this course are designed to help you achieve these outcomes:
Understand the basics of mathematical analysis, including statistical methods commonly used in research.
Apply an analytical framework to solve real world situations.
Analyze and solve higher level thinking mathematical problems using multiple concepts and skills.
IGCSE Maths consists of nine units distributed across four major sections: Number, Algebra, Space and Shape, Statistics and Probability:
The assessment will be completed in two parts: short-answer and structured questions. The short answer portion will be completed in 1 hour and 30 minutes and be worth 35% of the overall score. The structured question portion will be completed in 2 hours and 30 minutes and be worth 65% of the overall score.
Each topic will be weighted in the following way:
1. Number: 15% - 20%
2. Algebra: 35% - 40%
3. Space & Shape: 30% - 35%
4. Statistics and Probability: 10% - 15%
