The final design is composed of 3 elements:
An ergonomic handle
A depth-setting mechanism built into the housing of the cutting device
1-inch radius circular blades
The ergonomic handle is designed to be held at approximately 45° from the cutting surface and keeps the hand in a radial direction from the center of the blades. Its elliptical shape and small finger grooves allow it to be comfortably held by people with small or large hands.
The depth-setting mechanism allows the blades to be fully retracted into the device for safe handling and storage, or extended to a maximum cutting depth of 1.5 cm.
Cutting depth is adjusted by loosening two knobs on both sides of the device and moving the knob up or down a slot in the housing as the blades slide along the same slot.
Markers on the housing inform the user of the blade depth in 1 mm increments. Once the desired depth is reached, the knobs are then tightened to lock the blades into place.
The device has 3 sharpened steel circular blades. They are 22.5 mm in radius. Each blade has 6 cutting edges.
They are designed to make a pattern of 2 cm cut lengths with 0.5 cm spacing between cuts. The blades are spaced 0.5 cm apart. They rotate about a square shaft, with the middle blade offset by 90° on the shaft such that the middle cut pattern is offset relative to the sides.
