Final Design

Overview

The final design of the window guard is a French door-style window guard system designed to prevent children from falling out of windows while still allowing quick emergency escape. The system consists of two hinged panels mounted to the window frame, which swing open from the center when unlocked. This design was selected over an accordion-style concept because it provides significantly better structural strength and reduces issues like sagging and misalignment .

The panels are built from a white oak frame with internal aluminum bars, combining strength, durability, and lightweight performance. A dual-lock system is used to ensure safety: a sliding wooden lock with a detent pin at the top and a secondary latch at the bottom. This creates a multi-step unlocking process that is difficult for children to operate but easy for adults to use in an emergency. The system is mounted directly into wall studs using reinforced brackets to ensure stability under load.
