Heart rate variability during deep breathing and 5-minute blood pressure cuff hold
Project sponsor Dr. Stephen Bickler, Pediatric Surgeon and Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at UC San Diego Health, has focused his efforts on researching the relationship effect of urban-rural transitions in developing nations around the world. This transition is observed to affect neurovascular reactivity, a believed measure of sympathetic and parasympathetic tone that is reflected by heart rate variability (HRV). Accordingly, Dr. Bickler and his team have identified a need for a device that provides comprehensive, accessible evaluations of HRV to anyone around the world.
The solution is an all-in-one, point-of-care autonomic function monitor that is both compact and portable. The device can measure heart rate variability (HRV) during blood vessel constriction and deep breathing. The device also measures a user's heart rate (HR), volume of breath, and blood pressure. The device was specifically optimized for use in Sub-Saharan Africa, namely, Mozambique.
