The figure to the left is a close-up view of the four-sphere configuration using the splint to connect the spheres. The two, four, and five-sphere configurations used the same setup.
The second configuration was modified with rigid rod connections, which were added to prevent the top sphere from swaying during the descent.
The second configuration consisted of the same hardware setup as the first configuration, except a second sphere was added.
The figure above shows the first configuration studied in which the drag of only one sphere is analyzed.
In an effort to guarantee reliable data, double sensor holders were machined by the UCSD machine shop staff so that two sensors could be recording for any given trial.
