The rigid U-shape staples are deployed perpendicular to the recruited tissue. The barb design at the insertion tips ensure the staple remains in place for proper wound closure.

The needle arms contain sharp ends that are necessary to puncture the tissue in order to compensate for the lack of fine barbs on the staples due to 3D printing resolution on small scale objects.
