Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Further and more complete strain gauge analysis and design has been done
Old hard drive tester has been moved to EBU II for easier access complete with both power sources
Completed fabrication of temporary clamping mechanism for beams
Bending beam tests on hard drive tester being set up
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Obtained free samples of small full bridge strain gauges (Vishay, (Bryan)
Completed machining of bending beam clamping device (Daniel C. Paulo Daniel W.)
Moved hard drive tester from CMRR to EBU II basement (Daniel W., Daniel C. , Paulo)
Preliminary tests of Teflon sample on dish with no ice (All)
Researched Damping Tapes from 3M (Bryan , Paulo)
CAD drawing of hard drive tester with tapped holes (Bryan)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Obtain strain gauges and apply to a beam (Bryan)
Acquire DAC and fully understand circuit for strain gauges (Bryan Daniel C.)
Finalized beam design (Daniel W.)

Test smooth ice creation methods in the dish (Paulo)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Worried about the vibrations of the motor from the finalized design on the beam look into damping tape to suppress vibrations
We have looked at some of the various types of 3M tape and there are several types Description: 3M Vibration Damping Tape 434, 1 in x 60 yd, Price : $79.83 Per Roll
Wants us to make more tests for flattening and leveling ice and create a small mechanism to level it
We have been running a few tests with an iron and we are designing some small device to keep ice level in freezer
Put beam perpendicular to the sample for easiest calculation
Designed a clamping device to sit perpendicular to rotation of dish
Sponsor wants an error analysis (Monte Carlo) of beam vs. length
Need to run some new tests to determine this at different lengths
Have test set up by next week and use different damping materials if possible
We should have the test apparatus working by Wednesday afternoon we still need to obtain some damping materials
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
How to get table to temperature? Will it work
Spoke to Ray the Lab technician in CMRR about getting one of the other old testers to use in a freezer of some sort
Present budget to Professor Talke and Jin
Accepted it but still want approval before large purchases impressed that we have gotten most for so cheap or free
Get pictures of all experiments
We have for all experiments since Wednesday and need to rerun one from last week
Add click to link on our webpage
We will update it this afternoon.
Get a test down with material and actual beam and see if there are major vibrations. With a video
We have done a very basic one without ice and there are indeed some vibrations but we intend to find a damping material to hopefully fix this somewhat. Still need to film.
Take a photo of drops on each material
Photos have been taken but not uploaded
Risks and Areas of Concern
Selecting a strain gauge and beam combination to get the most accurate reading for friction
Possible vibrations with the thin shim stock beam
Ice not being very smooth
Resources or Information Required but not Available
We would like to use a large freezer to test the hard drive tester which was provided. We have no knowledge about the tester because it is so old and would like to see its performance at low temperatures
Schedule
Obtain and attach strain gauges by next Thursday 2/16 (Bryan, Daniel W.)
Complete smooth ice creation methods and leveling 2/10 (Paulo)
Run beam tests with various damping materials (Daniel C. Paulo)
Finalized beam type and size Wednesday 2/15
Brainstorm modification idea of the Hard Drive Tester (All)
Implement individual test data into report form (All)
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$20 – Shim stock
Now have a $500 budget but still need to run purchases by Professor Talke
Progress on Report and Webpage
Webpage has all individual component reports
Webpage has weekly progress reports
CAD drawing on front page
Add actual pictures and more updated info by Friday (Paulo Daniel C.)
Report – keeping data and pictures of our preliminary tests for use in the report first draft finished by Friday (Bryan and Daniel W.)
