Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Design has been changed to use electromagnetic brakes
Frequency range and resonance frequencies of system have been defined
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Tapered bearings have been finalized and are ready to order
List of feasible electromagnetic brakes has been found
Rough draft of Background, Review of Existing Solutions, Statement of Requirements, Deliverables is uploaded to website
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Complete design proposal presentation (all)
Finalize and order electromagnetic brakes (Zhan)
Order bearings (Ky)
Work on control algorithm (Chris)
Work on analysis of system (Derrick)

04/11/12 in person:
Power budget can be assumed to be 5% of total 500 Watt power, and system must run for 2 days of the 4 days that buoy will be at sea
Discussed characteristics of pendulum in relation to distance of frequency from resonance frequency
Longer pendulum is more likely to have a resonance frequency near our frequency range while shorter pendulum is more unstable, so must find balance
Very large amount of damping is required to change resonance frequency

04/09/12 in person:
Response of hydraulic disc brake is slower, so we've switched to electromagnetic brake
Advised us to get a better definition of our requirements from our sponsor
Power Requirement: < average of 25W per day
Time Requirement: 50% duty cycle over the course of 4 days
Settling Time: 15 minutes of warning before the antenna is active
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Risks and Areas of Concern
Still uncertain how often pendulum will be in unstable range of resonance frequency
Electromagnetic brake has less torque capability than hydraulic brake and some models may not be able to bring pendulum to full stop, so need to make sure it has sufficient stopping power
