ความเป็นมา
หลักสูตรปรัชญาดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมอุตสาหการ (Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering) ได้รับการพัฒนาขึ้นโดยภาควิชาวิศวกรรมอุตสาหการ คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ เพื่อสร้างผู้นำทางวิชาการและการวิจัยที่สามารถขับเคลื่อนภาคอุตสาหกรรมและเศรษฐกิจของประเทศไปสู่ความก้าวหน้าระดับสากล หลักสูตรนี้ก่อตั้งขึ้นเพื่อรองรับความต้องการผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านวิศวกรรมอุตสาหการที่มีศักยภาพในการพัฒนานวัตกรรม และสามารถแก้ไขปัญหาเชิงซับซ้อนได้ในโลกที่เปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็ว หลักสูตรนี้เริ่มต้นจากการเล็งเห็นถึงความสำคัญของวิศวกรรมอุตสาหการในฐานะกลไกสำคัญของการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมทั้งในระดับท้องถิ่นและระดับประเทศ โดยเฉพาะในเขตภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย โดยเปิดรับนักศึกษาเข้ามาศึกษาครั้งแรก ในปี พ.ศ.2550 โดยมีรองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.วิชัย ฉัตรทินวัฒน์เป็นประธานคณะกรรมการบริหารหลักสูตรคนแรก
โดยมีรายชื่ออาจารย์ที่ดำเนินงานบริหารหลักสูตรในตำแหน่ง "ประธานบริหารหลักสูตรปริญญาเอก สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมอุตสาหการ" ดังนี้

Background
The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Industrial Engineering was developed by the Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University, with the objective of producing academic and research leaders capable of driving the industrial sector and the national economy toward international advancement. This program was established to respond to the demand for highly qualified industrial engineering specialists who possess the potential to develop innovations and are able to solve complex problems in a rapidly changing world.
The program was initiated based on the recognition of the importance of industrial engineering as a key mechanism for industrial development at both local and national levels, particularly in Northern Thailand. The program admitted its first cohort of students in 2007 (B.E. 2550), with Associate Professor Dr. Wichai Chattinnawat serving as the first Chair of the Program Administrative Committee.
