A wave of mass hysteria begins with students suddenly screaming uncontrollably, forcing two friends, Khadijah and Rachel, to delve into the school's dark past to uncover the truth behind the phenomenon, as they try to understand and stop the growing panic amongst their classmates.  

 July Fielding is a high school senior who wakes up one day to find her entire town mysteriously deserted, leaving her alone to navigate the empty streets and piece together what happened through cryptic messages and flashbacks to a tumultuous summer before, where strained relationships with her friends, a budding romance, and a dangerous cliff-jumping tradition may hold the key to the disappearance of everyone she knew .

Sixteen years ago, Bel’s mother disappeared twice. The first time, she and baby Bel vanished from security footage at the mall. Later that same day, Rachel was apparently taken from her car, and Bel was left in the backseat, unscathed and comfortable and with no memory of what happened to her mother. Rachel’s disappearance has been the subject of much interest by the true crime crowd for some time, and Bel’s father agrees to let a documentary crew into their lives to hopefully put to rest the persistent rumors that he killed his wife. Midway through filming, however, the unthinkable happens: Rachel turns up.

The story of six Muslim teenagers who are falsely accused of a deadly attack, highlighting the complexities of the American justice system and the challenges faced by young people caught in the crosshairs of political scrutiny and racial profiling; the narrative is built around the idea that each character has "six truths and one lie" that could either exonerate them or further implicate them in the crime.
