All over the world countries are closing their doors to missionaries from the West. Most of these same countries, however, are eager for Westerners to come and help their people, build their infrastructure, and develop their human potential. Your major can be the key to mission. Whether you are studying computer information systems, nursing, counseling, elementary education, or business, your professional degree can enable you to access countries that are closed to traditional missionaries. A job overseas can put you in contact with people who have never met a Christian before, and allows them to see the Christ through you.
Crossing geographical boundaries is easy. Crossing cultures successfully is quite difficult. How do you learn a foreign language? How do you make friendships with people whose perspective of the world is vastly different than your own? How do you as an outsider communicate Christ in a way that is embraced instead of rejected? If you are to be successful in cross-cultural living and communicating, you must have training. The Intercultural Studies program at Emmaus specializes in this training, and has packed it into the Missions Certificate.
The Missions Certificate is equips you to take your professional skills abroad. This certificate can be completed alongside any Associate's or Bachelor's degree at Emmaus Bible College. As you work through completing your degree, you will add 6 strategic ICS courses, along with an amazing internship that gives you the opportunity to integrate the theory into a real-life experience abroad.
You can add the Missions Certificate without extending your stay at Emmaus. Most majors and associate degrees at Emmaus can seamlessly add the Missions Certificate, by taking advantage of electives built into your program. Here's a sample of several planners, showing how the certificate can integrate into your major.

Interns have gone all over the world, to every continent. Your ICS advisor will help you find a customized internship that fits with your passions and your major in a strategic cross-cultural setting.
Nope! Not in most cases.* Most Bachelor's degrees at Emmaus include 3 or 4 electives. Use these to complete courses in your Missions Certificate. The remaining classes can be added to a lean semester. Complete your internship in the summer, and you'll achieve the Missions Certificate without taking any extra time to graduate.
* Let's be honest, if you're in a program like Elementary Ed, you'll probably don't have room for electives. You may need an extra semester to complete your degree with the added Missions Certificate. But you can choose to take your student teaching overseas to fulfill the internship, and you would find the cross-cultural training invaluable in many teaching settings, in the US or abroad!
There's good news! A strategic, well-placed internship can fulfill the outcomes of both internships during the same 6-week trip abroad.
