Maybe you love the idea of making art, but you don't know where to begin.  Maybe you like to get creative, but don't want to deal with the mess.  Join Zoe Flores on a painting adventure designed for ages 5+. All projects can be simplified for the very young and made more advanced for more capable artists!  You've probably seen her murals all over San Angelo. Zoe is one seriously creative cat! This class will introduce famous contemporary artists and their styles.  You'll also learn various skills and techniques you can use for drawing and painting while making different projects every week.  If you are bringing children younger than 8 years old, we expect a parent, grandparent, babysitter, nanny, or other responsible adult to attend class and learn side by side with the student, help monitor supplies, correct usage of supplies, and encourage appropriate studio behavior- adults are strongly encouraged to make their own art projects and give their student artist autonomy and artistic choice throughout the class. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT TO TAKE THIS CLASS!  This class, taught by LaMont Allen, will offer students a comprehensive knowledge base for building musical skills.  Our primary text will be the Primo Music Theory Series. We will be building music fundamentals such as understanding the layout of a keyboard, decoding rhythms, and learning notes of a staff, students are then introduced to more complex vocabulary and music recognition.  As a student advances through the grade levels the class will introduce concepts of harmony and melody that lead to harmonic analysis, part writing and voice leading.

• Who are some of the most recognized composers for band, choral, keyboard and orchestral literature?

• What are some interesting facts about the composers' lives and their music?

• What are some well-known literature selections for band, choir, keyboard, and orchestra?

• Which key musical elements are important in band, choral, keyboard, and orchestral literature?

• Who are some renowned conductors and performers of band, choral, keyboard, and orchestral literature?

This is a Fee-Based [$80] semester-long general elementary music class meeting once a week on Wednesdays from 10-10:55am. Sound Explorers - Ages 6-10 is a music fundamentals exploration presented with an element of play, helping children develop a better understanding of key concepts in music. Students will sing in solfege (ear training to hear pitch), play melodic and rhythmic patterns on instruments, learn beginning music notation on the staff as well as participate in fun movement activities. Come join in the learning and fun! [Starts 8/19.  NO Class Wednesday, 11/25 (Thanksgiving Break), ends on 12/9. There is a group performance during class on the last day, 12/9, with parents and siblings invited to attend.] 

This is a Fee-Based [$80] semester-long class meeting once a week on Tuesdays from 10-10:55AM beginning on August 18 and ending on December 8. Students will need a BLACK 1" three-ring binder and their instrument of choice.  All students will also need a copy of the Essential Elements Book 1 for their specific instrument which can be purchased at Tarpley.  All other music will be provided. Mr. Lamont Allen will work with beginner level students ages 11 and above learning to playing woodwind and brass instruments in a concert band setting. No experience is required. Some instruments are available to borrow on a first come first served basis from our Instrument Library.  Otherwise, you will need to purchase or rent your own instrument. This class together with Music Theory Levels 1-2 is an ideal foundation for studying an instrument. This is a Fee-Based [$80] semester-long class meeting TWICE a week beginning on August 19th with sectionals and August 20th with the first full band rehearsal. Each instrument family will meet for 55 minutes every Wednesday for "sectionals" beginning on 8/19.The full Concert Band will rehearse every Thursday from 1:30-3PM beginning on 8/20. See more details about your sectional below.  PARTICIPATION IN BOTH SECTIONALS AND GROUP REHEARSALS IS REQUIRED. This is a fee-based [$80] semester-long class meeting once a week for 60 minutes every Thursday from 3:30-4:30pm beginning on August 20 and ending on December 10. Students will need to provide their own instrument excluding vibraphone, marimba, piano, and drums (suggested instruments are Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Upright Bass or Electric Bass, Acoustic or Electric Guitar, Clarinet, all Saxophones, or Flute.) Students will also need a BLACK 1" three-ring binder. Sheet music will be provided.

This is a semester-long sectional meeting once a week for 30 minutes every Thursday from 3-3:30pm right before Intro to Jazz Band beginning on August 20 and ending on December 10.  There is no additional fee for this sectional. If your student is signed up for Intro to Jazz Band in the rhythm section they should plan to attend this short session weekly.  Students will need to provide their own instrument excluding vibraphone, marimba, piano, drums, or Electric Bass/Stand up Bass. This is a fee-based [$80] semester-long class meeting once a week for 55 minutes on Wednesdays from 11-11:55AM beginning August 19 - December 9.  This class is separate from Intro to Jazz Band and intended for intermediate to advanced level students. Students will need to provide their own instrument (all WIND instruments are welcome.) Students will also need a BLACK 1" three-ring binder. Sheet music will be provided. Have you participated in Intro to Jazz Band and need a challenge that will take you to the NEXT level?  In this session, students focus on building intermediate and advanced skills that improve their playing as a unified "horn section".  There is no rhythm section supporting this class, the emphasis will be on developing the musician to successfully play in a "big band" setting. [Starts 8/19.  No class 11/25 for Thanksgiving Break. Ends by 12/10.]

[Students should have one academic year of band experience on their saxophone and be able to read music or a minimum of 9 months of private lessons to participate. FEE-BASED ENSEMBLE $80/SEMESTER: WEDNESDAY SAXOPHONE CHOIR 1 meets from 1:30-2:25pm on Wednesdays and AGAIN at 4:30-5:30pm On Thursdays each week. THURSDAY SAXOPHONE CHOIR 2 meets from 10-10:55am each week. Students will need a BLACK 1" three-ring binder and their instrument of choice [Alto, Soprano, Tenor, or Baritone Saxophone]. Sheet music will be provided. Interested students will be placed in one of two combos based on their audition.

Students will be expected to work on learning saxophone quartet music independently.  Saxophone choir rehearsals will be for putting music together as an ensemble - not for learning the music for the first time. Students who join this group will need to have a habit of practicing on their own.   Theses ensembles will be performing a variety of musical repertoire including but not limited to classical chamber music, jazz, and pop music genres.  The types of groups will depend on the number of students registered, available instrumentation, and student musical interests.  [Please contact the instructor NOW if you want to participate! Rehearsals will begin the week of 8/18. These are performance groups with opportunities to play at various venues around San Angelo, TBD. Class will end by 12/20.]

This is a fee-based [$80] semester long class meeting once a week every Wednesday, 9-9:55AM, from August 19 to December 9. Additionally, students will need a BLACK 1" three-ring binder and violin/viola with chin and shoulder rest, or cello/stand-up bass with a rock-stop, and a bow with rosin.  All music will be provided.   NEW Orchestra Director Emilee Hall-Rocha works with beginner level students ages 8-18 interested in playing the violin, viola, cello, and upright bass.  No experience required.  We have violins, violas, and cellos in a variety of sizes available to borrow on a first come first served basis from our Instrument Library.  If you want to borrow an instrument from ESOFA you should email esofa@emmanuel-sa.org after enrolling in the class with your students name and the size of the instrument you need.  Requests will only be accepted via email and will be fulfilled in the order received.  Designed for students with no prior experience reading or playing music. Students typically stay in this class for 2 semesters before auditioning for the concert and chamber performance orchestras.

Beginners with little to no experience are encouraged to attend this class! Students that have not touched the guitar since May are encouraged to sign up for this class (if you don't plan to practice what you learn, the Jam Circle will feel overwhelming.) Songs featuring common chords such as G C, A, F, D, E, Em, Am, and Dsus, will be introduced.  This is a wonderful introductory session for anyone who wants to sing and/or play the guitar.  Students can graduate to the Jam Circle where students learn to sing and play songs together as a group!  Students who practice and progress faster than others can be moved to the more advanced circle at the teacher's discretion. This is a Fee-Based [$80] semester long class meeting once a week every Wednesday from 12:30-1:25PM, beginning on August 19 - December 9.  This class is designed for students who can already play common chords such as G C, A, F, D, E, Em, Am, and Dsus with ease.  In this class, students use foundational techniques and beginner chord progressions to sing and play songs together as a group!  New songs will be introduced each week (a mixture of oldies, country, folk, rock, praise, and contemporary, age-appropriate music) together with strumming and fingerpicking patterns for each song. Students bring their own guitar.  [We have several acoustic guitars in the instrument library if your student needs one. Starts 8/19. No Class 11/25 for Thanksgiving break. Ends 12/9.]

Contemporary Worship music featuring common chords such as G C, A, F, D, E, Em, Am, and Dsus, will be introduced.  Class will be a mixture of acoustic guitar, ukulele, bass guitar, violin, cello, percussion, and piano. Students should bring their own instrument, we will provide piano, marimba, and drum set when needed. In this hands-on class, young artists will explore looming, weaving, needle felting, and embroidery while improving hand-eye coordination and building new skills. Each project is designed to spark creativity and confidence as students master traditional textile techniques. Best of all, select pieces created in this class will be featured in Angelo Civic Theatre’s production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat—giving students the exciting opportunity to see their artwork come to life on stage! Through hands-on practice, they'll develop shading techniques, pencil pressure control, and an understanding of scale and proportion to bring their artwork to life. A monochromatic mixed media class based around the history and significance of COLORS. Each week we'll focus on a different color in the rainbow (and beyond), explore its presence in the world, how its earliest pigments for painting/ceramic/fabric dye etc. were made, and famous usage of said color. Then, we'll create monochromatic pieces honoring each color we learn about. With a mix of hands-on practice and inspiration from real-world artists, students will develop their own unique artistic voice while building skills that will last a lifetime!   [Starts 8/20. In this hands-on art class, kids will explore the world of sculpture and construction using one of the most accessible and fun materials—cardboard- to create castles, dragons, fairy lands and so much more! They'll learn how to turn simple sheets of cardboard into amazing 3D models, dioramas, and sculptures, experimenting with cutting, folding, and assembling to create their own imaginative designs. Students will also discover how artists use these techniques in the real world, from set design to large-scale installations. By the end of the course, they'll have crafted their own unique creations and gained a deeper understanding of how to bring their ideas to life through sculpture and construction. It's a perfect mix of creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on fun! No make-up classes are offered.  This class is taught by Zoe Flores. Students will also discover how artists use these techniques in the real world, from set design to large-scale installations. By the end of the course, they'll have crafted their own unique creations and gained a deeper understanding of how to bring their ideas to life through sculpture and construction. Fee-Based $160.00 includes t-shirt: This is a semester long class meeting every Thursday for 55min from 9-9:55AM, beginning August 20, ending December 10. This class is designed for our youngest Lego Engineers who are eager to start robotics but don't yet have the math skills for intricate coding.  This hands-on building-based class will focus on designing and building simple machines that work with manpower [pulleys, levers, wheels and axels, wedges, inclined planes, and gears]. Objectives will include: building solid structures that don't easily fall apart, understanding the benefits of a symmetrical design, identifying simple machines we see in everyday life and replicating them with Lego, and constructing designs without step-by-step directions. This is not a coding class, but a foundational class that will enhance and elevate the potential of future robot builds.  {This class does NOT use the EV3 robots.  We use motorized NXT components}. Fee-Based $200.00/semester, includes t-shirt: This is a semester long class meeting every Wednesday for 55min from 11-11:55AM, beginning August 19 - December 9. This hands-on course introduces students to the basic functions and coding for each motor and sensor in Lego NXT robotics kit, including on-brick programming.  Coding involves math (decimals, fractions, distance), physics, multi-step problem solving, and critical thinking!  Students hone their skills during weekly challenges and group activities.  Course is required for students brand new to LEGO robotics building & coding.  This class is taught by Karyn Kuniyuki. [Starts 8/19. NO Class 11/25 (Thanksgiving Break), ends on 12/9.]

Fee-Based $200/semester includes t-shirt, tournament fees and lunch on 12/4: There are two gauranteed robotics tournaments before Christmas.  The first tournament will be held during lego lab time the week of Halloween with NO spectators.  Our 5th Annual Robotics Competition is hosted by Emmanuel on Friday, December 4th, and is open to the public.  This class meets every Tuesday for 2 hours from 1:30-3:30pm. Each school year we adopt a new "Arena" contest.  Robots are scored by judges according to specific requirements and the number of preset tasks that are completed within a time limit. This year, each student will build and code their own robot, all based around the same challenge.  A (2) hour Lego Lab meets every week for students to build and code, and for competitors to learn how to work together with other robots in preparation for the official competitions. This class is taught by Karyn Kuniyuki. [Starts 8/18.  No class 11/24. Emmanuel Invitational Tournament will be held on Friday, December 4.  Ends 12/8 during normal class time.]
