As a secondary-education math teacher candidate at EMU, you have 3 grade-band concentrations to choose from:
Middle School: Grades 5-9Â
High School: Grades 7-12
Middle School and High School: Grades 5-9 and 7-12
The Middle-and-High-School option has only 3 more credit hours than just the High School option, and 6 more than the Middle School option.
The grade bands extend a bit outside of the usual definition of MS and HS grades due to Michigan Department of Education requirements, aimed at helping teachers know what comes before and after the specific grades they want to teach.
The example programs of study that are shown below, one for each grade-band option, can give you an idea of what courses you could take in 4 years to finish the program.
The program of study requires you to be a double-major in:
Secondary Mathematics Education in the College of Arts and Sciences, and
Teaching and Learning in the College of Education
The courses for both majors are included in the program maps for convenience. For more information about the courses in the Teaching and Learning major, contact the College of Education.
The examples only list required courses, pre-requisites and electives. They account for the General Education requirements. To complete the major in 4 years, students should expect to take approximately 15 credit hours per semester (15 x 8 semesters = 120 hours).
Course rotations can change and the examples might end up out of synch with them, so be sure to contact an advisor for the most up-to-date information.
