High School Summer Science Program
@Eastern Michigan University
This unique program allows high school students, in teams of two, to be matched with a faculty mentor and an undergraduate research student to work on a research project in either biology, chemistry or physics. Participants will generate new scientific knowledge and will give a presentation showcasing their accomplishments at the close of the program.
During this intensive three-week summer program, students will learn how to:
Perform experimental techniques.
Learn the process of scientific research
Gather and record data
Interpret their findings
Communicate their research
Apply science lab safety
Uphold research ethics
Prepare and give a scientific presentation
"I learned new terminology, lab safety tools, and the steps in recording research as objectives, results and discussions.
"I liked that I was able to complete tasks that contributed to the research instead of [just] watching."
"By participating in the EMU Research program, I gained insight to what lab work in college looks like. I also learned that detailed records of data and protocols are essential for the interpretation of correct results as well as reflection of the procedure after the experiment(s)."
