Frequently Asked Questions about the HSP3 Program
Is this program like a summer camp or a school class?
Neither. This is an authentic research experience and each high school student will get a unique project to work on.
What type of research projects are available?
The research projects vary from year to year, as different EMU faculty serve as mentors each year, and they all work on different research project.
When does the application portal open?
The application portal is expected to open sometime in early March.
When will I know if I am accepted into the program?
You will be notified sometime in late May. You will receive an email by the program director if you have been selected.
How many students are accepted into the program?
Historically, we have accepted 8-12 students. The exact number depends on the amount of funding available to sponsor the student.
Am I guaranteed acceptance into the program?
No, acceptance isn’t guaranteed. We typically receive more applications than the number of program spots.
How are applicants selected?
This is a difficult question to answer, as some of the funding agencies that sponsor the program require have different candidate selection priorities.
Is there a program waitlist?
Yes, once students have been notified about program acceptance, a waitlist will be started. Usually, one or two students find that they cannot attend the program and a person from the waitlist can be added to the program.
What are the program hours?
They are typically 10AM-3PM. These can deviate slightly depending on the nature of the project and the schedules of the mentor. This is not a residential program.
Do I get to select my mentor?
We have a mentor selection process that takes into account the student’s preferences and academic preparedness of the student.
Do I have to participate the entire program duration?
Yes, you are expected to participate for the entirely program duration.
Are meals provided?
As of now, we have public and private funding sources that support lunches for high school participants.
What is the cost of the program?
As of now, we have public and private funding sources that support the entire program. Therefore, it will not cost anything for the student to participate in the program.
Which organization fund the program?
These organizations can change from year to year, but we have historically received funding from the Michigan Space Grant Consortium, National Science Foundation, Eastern Michigan University and Toyota Drives Possibilities.
Do I need to provide my own transportation?
Yes, you do. Typically, students are dropped off by an authorized adult or the student drives themselves.
