Each year, the incoming cohort of Honors students reads the same book and comes together to discuss the book at the start of classes. This year, the Honors Common Read is also the statewide selection for the 2021-2022 Great Michigan Read: The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell. The book is readily available in local public libraries and bookstores.
The Honors College is proud to be selected as a 2021-2022 Great Michigan Read Community Partner for the statewide reading and discussion of The Women of the Copper Country, by Mary Doria Russell. Stop by the Honors College today to pick up your copy of The Women of the Copper Country and see below to find out about ways to get involved!
In addition to our Common Read Discussion of the novel in September, we will be organizing and hosting a number of book discussions for the community throughout the academic year, including a co-sponsored event in March 2022 during Women's History Month with fellow GMR Partner, The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
If you would like to help organize/participate in these community book discussions, or perhaps are interested in starting a book group in your own community, or want to explore the issues around the novel in more depth through an Honors independent study, please contact Associate Dean, Dr. John Staunton (jstaunto@emich.edu).
Depending on your level of involvement, you may be able to earn Community Service hours, Honors Experiences (Leadership or Intellectual/Cultural), or even Honors Course credit.
