EMU's Freshwater Jellyfish Research

Who are the freshwater jellyfish?

Craspedacusta sowerbii, or the peach blossom jellyfish, are a species of freshwater hydromedusa cnidarians. They are indigenous to the Yangtze River in China, but have been detected in all continents besides Antarctica (Didžiulis & Żurek, 2013).

In this class, we aim to investigate C. sowerbii in some freshwater lakes in Michigan. While C. sowerbii are not native to Michigan, they seem to pose no threat to the local ecosystems. As such, they are referred to as a harmless "exotic" species.
