In 1995, the development team at Autodesk was hard at work on a project codenamed Mustang. The project would later release in 1999 as the very first version of Inventor. The goal of Project Mustang was to provide a user friendly software that was capable of competing with the industry leading 3D modeling and CAD/CAM software of the time.
The first version of Inventor offered basic 3D parametric modeling capabilities. It was the first software of its time that was able to directly compete with industry-leading Dassault Systems SolidWorks!
A new version of Inventor has been released approximately every year since. By the time version 14 was released in 2009, the software was capable of more advanced features such as design automation, sheet metal design, and engineering simulation!
