Genetic tests

We offer genetic testing for several genes. Genetic testing can tell you:

• Whether your animal is heterozygous for a recessive morph

• Which alleles your animal carries (e.g. Albino vs. Toffee/Candy or Yellowbelly vs. Gravel)

We have tests for the following:

• Albino (Note: There are two mutations for Albino. We have a test for one of them.)

• Toffee/Candy

• Lavender Albino

• Ultramel (Note: There are two mutations for Ultramel. We have a test for one of them.)

• Piebald

• Yellowbelly, Spark, Specter, Asphalt, and Gravel

Testing happens a twice per year, as part of an undergraduate course. Testing is free, but our capacity is limited.

We are transitioning to a lottery policy to fulfill test requests:

• To enter the lottery for a genetic test, send in a shed for your animal and mark your request for a test on the bag.

• Include your email address in the shipment.

• Prior to our next round of testing, we will email out a survey to everyone who has requested a test. Complete the survey to enter the lottery for a test.

• Test results will be sent to you via email.
