Welcome to

1st Grade

Hi Families! My name is Mrs. Valla and I will be your child’s first grade teacher. This will be my 13th year teaching first grade at Memorial School. I graduated from the University of Scranton with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I then received a Master’s degree in Literacy Education from Fordham University. First grade is an exciting time for children as they embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. Your child will continue to learn to read, write stories, problem solve, and explore his/her imagination. I am confident that your child will have an exciting and productive year! Mrs. Gammarati and I will do our best to make learning a fun and enriching experience! I look forward to meeting you and your child and working together to ensure his/her success!
Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns

Resources

In this section you will find resources and helpful links that will help your child's learning easily accessible. This section will be updated throughout the year and build upon our learning.

Student sites

Literacy, Math & Science Links

I have compiled a list of resources and websites that can help foster your child's interest in reading, keep their math skills sharp, and learn more about a ton of science topics. By taking advantage of these free resources, your child will be able to practice reading independently, have a new story read to them, practice number concepts, and discover jellyfish, the water cycle and more!

ABCya! http://www.abcya.com/

Children can listen to a story or read along with highlighted text using ABCya! There are also a variety of other other skills including counting, letter identification, addition & subtraction, puzzles, and much more!

You Tube - High Frequency Words (a.k.a Red Words) https://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=Dfb6lY0TJCQ

This YouTube video reads the red words, we also refer to them as Club Words, that we will be learning over the course of the year. These words are not phonetic and therefore cannot be sounded out and must be learned and recognized by sight.

Storyline Online http://www.storylineonline.net/

Developed by the Screen Actor's Guild and features actors and actresses reading popular books.

National Geographic Young Explorers http://ngexplorer.cengage.com/ngyoungexplorer/index.html

Created especially for Kindergarten and First graders, the magazine reads non-fiction topics with highlighted text so children can follow along.

Study Jams http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/index.htm

Scholastic's site, Study jams, has a large collection of math and science topics that students can explore. The math concepts are challenging.

We Give Books http://www.wegivebooks.org/

A Pearson Foundation Initiative, this site is unique in that each book read online results in a donated book to a charity for children. This site is for the parents or proficient reader since it is "Read to Self" (without narration).

Starfall http://starfall.com

A highly engaging site where children can have books read to them while following along. Starfall also gives an opportunity for kids to create their own story. While mostly free of charge, some of the features can be accessed by purchasing the premium version.

International Children's Digital Library http://en.childrenslibrary.org/

This free site offers books from around the world. While the site does not narrate, parents can use this site to read and learn with their child.
