The Mosaic Lab:
Identities in the Ancient Mediterranean
Identities in the Ancient Mediterranean
The Ancient Mediterranean was a vibrant, interconnected sea of peoples speaking different languages, worshipping many gods, and belonging to many polities. In many ways, it was a mosaic of multiculturalism, with many tiny pieces making up a much more complicated picture- hence the name of this project.
This website seeks to explore the many peoples, places, and ideas that lived in the part of the world often labeled simply "Greco-Roman." We highlight student and student-faculty research projects conducted in the Department of Classical Studies at William and Mary. In addition to the familiar, this website seeks to provide an interactive journey through times and places which will challenge some commonly held ideas about the Ancient Mediterranean.
The Mosaic Lab is organized thematically with topics belonging to multiple categories. Explore via the menu on the left or scroll down to see featured exhibits.
