Artist Statement

Through my study and design of architecture, I’ve found myself consistently exploring the relationship between positive and negative space within my structures, the presence and absence of material.

I attempt to interpret how varying the balance between these affect our perception of a given space. Increasing the presence and use of building materials may result in a more closed, segregated design, while decreasing the amount of materials and incorporating more negative space usually results in a more open, larger design. I further explore the interaction between light, shadow, and mass in my projects and the effects it has visually and mentally on a space. As well as how fluctuating the connection one has with the surrounding landscape further changes the feel of the design.

My intention is not to deem one type of space superior to the other, but to explore the role in which each type of design plays in our lives.
