Tracie Lee Gilchrist
Tracie Lee Gilchrist was born on South Henry Street, Williamsburg where she grew up in her family's home. Tracie, her mother, and grandmother, Gracie and Adeline respectively, were all born in the same house. This house belonged to her great-grandmother and her sisters, Lucy, Jane, and Mary Lee, which was located across from the William and Mary Law School. Tracie's grandmother was a waitress, her mother was a manager at Ann-Heiser Busch, and her great-grandmother and great-aunts were homemakers. Her father, Hernel Pierce Cumber, side of the family lived on Braxton Court. She spent a lot of time during childhood at her grandfather's house on Braxton Court, which she fondly remembers as a street with a lot of Black pride.

Tracie Lee Gilchrist participated in an oral history with The Village Initiative’s Local Black Histories Project. She generously offered memories of Black neighborhoods where her family members once lived, including South Henry Street and Braxton Court. She reflects powerfully on the displacement of Black communities from Williamsburg and the legacies of that displacement today.
