Mrs. Sylvia Tabb-Lee
Mrs. Sylvia Tabb-Lee has been an educator in Colonial American history for the last 30 years and began her journey in performing. She was a student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and performed on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center's famous "Windows of the World." She is a passionate performer that captivated audiences everywhere.
Sylvia Tabb-Lee returned to Williamsburg, VA where she worked as an interpreter for the African American Interpretations and Presentations department (AAIP) in Colonial Williamsburg for until 1996. During this time, she assisted in erecting slave quarters at Carter's Grove Plantation and created in-costume interpretations of the lifes of enslaved people. She was featured on CBS Sunday Morning among other television, theatre, and musical performances. She later interpreted the history of slavery with the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.
Following her career at Colonial Williamsburg, Mrs. Sylvia Tabb-Lee continued on as an independent contractor and directed her talents towards teaching history through performance. She worked extensively with tour companies and agencies that allowed her to perform at schools and other educational institutions. With her, she carried her motto, "Each One, Teach One", as the driving force behind the numerous programs she created.

In this oral history, Mrs. Sylvia Tabb-Lee and her sister, Mrs. Maria Olivia Tabb Norman, recall their family life and the work of their parents, Rev. James Bowden Tabb, Sr. (1926-1996) and Mrs. Edna Beatrice Green Tabb (1928-1978), during the Civil Rights era in Williamsburg.

As part of her long performing career, Mrs. Sylvia Tabb-Lee is also a member of The Rejoicing Singers alongside Mrs. Maria Olivia Tabb Norman, Mr. Jesse Bell, and Mr. Robert Hall. The Rejoicing Singers generously recorded the two performances below as entertainment for The Local Black Histories Project Online Launch Event in November 2021.
