Ms. Mildred Walker

Ms. Mildred Walker was born on Barnes Road in Toano. She began playing music at the age of three, which became a lifelong passion. Ms. Walker graduated from Bruton Heights School in 1960 and went on to work as a life insurance agent, a manager at Goodyear Auto Service, and a real estate agent.

Ms. Walker has had a highly successful career in real estate. Her important work included supporting Black families to purchase homes in the Forest Glen subdivision in the 1970s when Black people faced discrimination in the housing market. The families she helped advocated for naming two streets in her honor: "Mildred Drive" and "Walker Drive". She has received additional accolades for her achievements in real estate. The Virginia Peninsula Association of REALTORS gave her the name "Million Dollar Mildred." She was also the first Black real estate agent named a Platinum Award Winner.

Since retiring, she is still involved with Keller Williams Realty and has been a member of the Newport News National Association of Negro Business and the Professional Women's Club for 35 years. Ms. Walker maintains a strong connection with her faith and family and is proud of the accomplishments of her seven children.

Ms. Walker is also an accomplished gospel musician and regularly performs at community functions.
