Research Interests
For most of my career, my main research focus has been on Greek political thought. I have published two books in this area, The Politics of Socratic Humor (University of California Press, 2018) and Plato's Political Thought (Brill, 2024). I have also published articles on Aristophanes, the concept of isonomia, and Athenian anti-tyranny legislation.
My primary interest in Roman political thought is the Roman Stoics. I have published an article on the topic of tolerance in the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. I currently have working papers on "Epictetus and Socratic Irony" and "Socratic Intellectualism and Stoic Tolerance."
My current research is focused on Chinese political thought. I am in the early stages of a book-length comparative project on the Zuozhuan 左傳 and Thucydides. I have also presented conference papers on Li Zhi 李贄 and the Zhuangzi 莊子.
