As part of an agreement with Keck Environmental Field Laboratory, we log every fish we catch in Lake Matoaka no matter the size or the species. We do this to monitor fish populations, activity, and behavior. If you are interested in working with this data for research please contact us and Keck Lab. The specific information we collect are who caught the fish, what day/time the fish was caught, where the fish was caught, what length and weight the fish was, and the location. This is all done seamlessly through the Survey123 App. This app is available for download on all phones and computers and is designed to be used right when the fish is caught. Alternatively, THIS LINK can be used to log fish.
Although many of our members now enjoy fishing access to Lake Matoaka, when we first started, this was NOT the case. Only after a series of petitions, emails, and meetings was the existing policy reexamined. To maintain our access to using our beautiful Lake Matoaka we ask that you abide by the below rules.
Purchase a fishing license from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (any license covering freshwater will work for Matoaka)
Do not fish off the boathouse dock at any time.
Do not use livebait of any kind including worms, shiners, sunfish, etc.
Practice catch and release. (You wouldn't want to eat those fish anyway)
All fish must be logged using the above Survey123 software.
Keep our lake beautiful and practice the principles of Leave No Trace. (respect wildlife and the others enjoying it by using sustainable practices)
You are only permitted to fish by boat/canoe/watercraft through the Lake Matoaka Boathouse during boathouse hours and up to the maximum of 4 watercrafts.
