everything is purple
everything is purple
been thinking about Kanye
been seeing a lot of Coachella #coachellaszn
I love Kanye
Coachella: "The crappy version of Warped Tour" - Urban Dictionary
I miss the old Kanye, straight from the 'Go Kanye
Chop up the soul Kanye, set on his goals Kanye
I hate the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye
The always rude Kanye, spaz in the news Kanye
I miss the sweet Kanye, chop up the beats Kanye
I gotta to say at that time I'd like to meet Kanye
See I invented Kanye, it wasn't any Kanyes
And now I look and look around and there's so many Kanyes
I used to love Kanye, I used to love Kanye
I even had the pink polo, I thought I was Kanye
What if Kanye made a song about Kanye
Called "I Miss The Old Kanye, " man that would be so Kanye
That's all it was Kanye, we still love Kanye
And I love you like Kanye loves Kanye
- Kanye West, "I Love Kanye," 2016
I really wanted to use the intro of Kanye's "Runaway", which is a piano solo, as the music because I like it - that was really it. I toyed with the idea of someone running into the distance, or a ballet dancer, and then I started looking into how to rig things and run cycles, and it got very complicated very quickly. So then I thought it would be cool to do like a outdoor-festival-scene-type-deal, and that's where I ended up.
The movie starts off with a closeup of a piano playing the intro to Runaway (yes it actually plays the intro to Runaway) hopefully you can see this if the sound on my video doesn't get muted. The camera zooms out and we see a baby grand - it keeps zooming and we see a person sitting on top of a soundstage *whaaaat*. The idea is there are some artists sitting on top of a soundstage celebrating their success, and they're so in awe of the beauty of their surroundings that the guy holding the champagne drops it!!(oh nooo)!! The bottle shatters and the camera zooms out again to show the entire sceen. Fin.
My actual animation ended up varying slightly from the storyboard, if you switch the 3rd and 4th storyboard frames it's pretty spot on.
thought they were cool wanted to include a close up
for scale
whoopie!
To get the whole bottle situation working and rendering out properly was kind of a long processes, and here it is.
To do this I used the solid shatter effect option which calculates all the geometry and actually splits the object into the desired number of pieces.
I used bullet dynamics for this as opposed to just using gravity because I wanted it to collide and shatter in a specific way. The set of cracked objects is a set of active rigid body objects, and the stage itself is a passive rigid body object which allows for the collision.
The bottle just kind of explodes when dynamics are added. To fix that I changed the collision shape to hull and and set the collision shape margin to zero, and glued the shapes together. I made the start time line up with the camera movement so it would fall at the right time.
After rendering it with the dynamics, it was just ugly/terrible/didn't work right. So, I had to figure out how to make that work right (can't bake the keys on it since its not a MASH)
Alembic does some wizardy; From the Maya Website "The contents of Alembic cache files are evaluated as Maya geometry and can be modified with polygon, NURBS, and subdivision surface editing tools." It doesn't turn it into keyframes the way bake does, and I can't really explain it, but it works.
I exported the active rigid body group to an Alembic cache file, and then REMOVED the entire bullet dynamic system. I then imported the Alembic cache file back in and VOILĂ€ worked perfectly. The bottle falls and shatters exactly how it should when rendered out.
This video explains it pretty well.
Final Animation with sound might get blocked, but hopefully not
the sound is pretty key to the whole aesthetic, so please listen with!
Final Animation without sound in case the video with sound is blocked :/
also I can't seem to center these embedded Vimeo players which is why they're off to the side like this
