Design Build Pavilion at the NCMA

This pavilion was designed and constructed by a small class at NC State University on the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC. It’s main function was to provide some storage for garden equipment and provide a shaded shelter for gathering and outdoor classes.

Utilizing a scorched wood technique called shou sugi ban which naturally waterproofs the wood and creates a beautiful black finish.

The butterfly shaped roof collects water on the central spine and directs water to a carefully crafted gutter and spout that drain onto a rock bed and garden.
