Thank you for joining us for the We're Open 2018 Professional Development Workshop, sponsored by Lord Fairfax Community College, Lumen Learning, and the Achieving The Dream Foundation! We hope you enjoyed your experience and that you've found some useful information through the discussions and presentations you attended. In the spirit of being OPEN, we are sharing materials from the opening session, the breakout session, and the 'Panel of Pioneers'. Again, thank you for joining us!
For most, engaging with the adoption of open educational resources (OER) begins with lowering cost and improving access by offering alternatives to expensive publisher textbooks. To begin this session, I will review some of the research I have conducted in my doctoral program at the College of Willima and Mary on the cost of textbooks across colleges. Next, I will address the opportunities that OER facilitate beyond cost savings. Finally, I will share some of the research practices at Lumen Learning that deeply impact student learning and outcomes.
This presentation will review the differences between traditional educational resources and open educational resources (OER). I will explain the use of Creative Commons licenses, and the ability for educators to freely revise, remix, and redistribute OER materials. I will share my experience using OER in my social work courses, as well as the results of our OER pilot test at Radford University. These will be contextualized in the existing evidence base for OER and its impact on student learning. Finally, I will share resources for finding and working with OER in higher education.
Dive into the process of locating and adopting OER with two OER librarians. We'll talk about where to start an OER search and take a look at some OER options available. Then we'll walk through the process of collaborating, crafting, and then ultimately implementing your own OER class without reinventing the wheel.
