Links to Visible Thinking Routines
Who Am I? Explore, Connect, Identify, Belong
A routine to explore the complexity of identity.
This visible thinking routine lends itself beautifully to units on Human Development. Family and Consumer Science students could use this routine to think about who they are and then about someone else. Considering how they have become who they are, where they belong and what that can mean in our changing world.

Think, Pair, Share
A routine for active reasoning and explanation.
Through collaboration in the Family and Consumer Science classroom, students are able to use this visible thinking routine to listen and share ideas. Think, Pair, Share encourages students to understand multiple perspectives by posing a question to students, asking them to take a few minutes of thinking time and then turning to a nearby student to share their thoughts.

Compass Points
A routine for examining propositions.
This visible thinking routine would be a fun whole class activity to use at the beginning of a Family and Consumer Science unit. It works well as students are able explore various sides and facets of a proposition or idea prior to taking a stand or expressing an opinion on it. As students flesh out an idea or proposition, they express what excites and worries them, determine what information they must still gather, and eventually evaluate it.

I Used to Think . . . Now I Think . . .
A routine for reflecting on how and why our thinking has changed.
This visible thinking routine can be used whenever students’ initial thoughts, opinions, or beliefs are likely to have changed as a result of instruction or experience. It lends itself to many Family and Consumer Science units but I think it could be enlightening to use after a lesson on Nutrition & Wellness and its relationship to Well-Being.

See, Think ,Wonder
A routine for exploring works of art and other interesting things.
This routine encourages students to make careful observations and thoughtful interpretations which is best suited for a new unit in Family and Consumer Science class. It helps stimulate curiosity and sets the stage for inquiry. It helps to motivate student interest and makes connects to a topic during the unit of study.
